Session Title:  Nursery Field Soil Health

Monday, July 12  3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Description:  The impact of different cultivation practices currently used by field nursery tree producers has not been evaluated to understand their efficacy for improving soil health, tree growth, or reducing production costs. In this session, we will explore the soil management best practices of field nursery producers.

Session Title:  Rethinking How and What You Mix to Engineer More Profitable Substrates

Tuesday, July 13  9:15 AM - 10:00 AM

Description: This session will cover hot-off-the-press findings from stratified (i.e. layered) substrate research from across the United States and provide the background to how we got to where we are today. Topics include substrate hydrology and chemistry as it affects water and fertility management from pot up to sale. At the end of the session, you will understanding plant development during production, substrate hydrology with an emphasis on solute (i.e. nutrient) transport, and substrate texture and how it relates to water management.

    Research Horticulturist at USDA-ARS

I am a USDA-ARS research horticulturist located at the Application Technology Research Unit in Wooster, OH. My research focuses on water management within controlled environment horticulture, including nursery and greenhouse, to increase efficiency, minimize environmental impact, and ensure profitability. This is accomplished via an integrated research team, including post-doctorate fellows and visiting students, using a systems approach from source to application to receiving waters.
